Bertie's ABC is the newest release Alphabet App from developer The Story Mouse. Young children practice letters and sounds with flashcards and games. Switch between letter names and letter sounds to give students ample practice with both skills.
Meet Bertie - a cute little guinea pig. He is your guide through this app. Students are greeted with the options of Bertie's ABC, Letters and Sounds, or Games upon beginning play. In Bertie's ABC, young learners can tap the flashcards of each letter to reveal a picture and commentary that begins with that letter. Buttons at the bottom give users the option to switch between letter names or letter sounds, or to switch between capital and lower case letters. Tapping the play button at the bottom reveals each card in sequence and shows that the commentary with each picture is strung together in a rhyme.
In Letters and Sounds, kids tap on the letter flashcards to hear and see just the word associated with that letter. Again, tapping the buttons on the bottom changes the letter type and switches from letter name to sound.
In Games, users can choose one of three activities. Carrot Quiz asks students a variety of multiple choice questions about identifying letters, sounds, or images. The Matching Pairs game has students match letters or sounds on cards in a game of memory. The Big and Small game shows either a capital or lower case letter and asks users to find the matching letter.
Young learners need lots of practice with letters to become fluent in letter names and sounds. Often, preschool apps only deal with capital letters. I really liked how much freedom there was to switch between the letter types. It was a really seamless switch, too. Tapping the button in the middle of narration didn't even give the app a hiccup. I also really liked that toggling between the letter sound and letter name was also smooth. This capability would make this app useful in a school setting where teachers are trying to differentiate for students at various ability levels.
Overall, Bertie's ABC does a nice job of giving kids practice with letters. The app isn't flashy, but does a nice job of switching from capital to lower case and from letter name to letter sound. I'd love to see record keeping capabilities in future updates to show how students are progressing in the matching games and quiz.
