Alphabeasties is a super cute app designed for children from ages one to five, and focuses on letters and letter formation. Players are given three options on the main menu: Read & Write, Color & Draw, and Learn. Each section has unique activities for each letter of the alphabet (Do the math – that’s a lot of fun activities!)
Learn is a basic flashcard style activity where children tap each letter of the alphabet and then turn the page to see an image that starts with that letter, made out of the letter. For example, the hippopotamus is made of a bunch of H’s and the monkey is made of many M’s. Each image is animated and tapping on it elicits the narrator to read the word aloud.
Color & Draw is an activity focused on letter tracing. Each letter has a picture created using the letter (Jam Jars filled with J’s, a Kangaroo made of K’s). Children tap the flashing yellow dot in each picture to begin the activity. After tapping the dot, either a capital or lowercase letter is shown, with an arrow illustrating where to trace. Each letter teaches the correct letter formation. Each picture asks you to trace the letter an average of six times.
Read & Write has a different activity based on the letter. This experience has a variety of tasks. In some places children trace letters to complete a picture; in others they tap the correct letter to move through a maze. Each activity is varied and different from the letters in the Color & Draw or Learn sections.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
To begin with, this app is adorable. I’m a sucker for images made of letters and words to begin with, and this app does a great job of associating common objects with letters. The animations are well done, but not over the top, so the focus remains on letter formation and learning. I really liked that children have a model for how to trace each letter, and they have to practice each letter multiple times within each picture. Unlike many apps, this one is monitored for neatness. Kids can’t just scribble to fill in the letter. They must actually create the letter to achieve success. My favorite section is the Read & Write section. Those activities are simply adorable. From writing R’s to fill in the rats’ faces to tracing Z’s on the zipper of a tent, each activity was just plain cute.
Overall, Alphabeasties is such a cute app, and perfect for the young ones in your family. The varied repetition of each letter is perfect for practice that won’t get stale or boring. Having a model is particularly useful for those of you with budding writers. I’ve found the tracing practice excellent for my four year old son – especially when he practices with a stylus to learn pencil grasp. This top pick will definitely be getting some use over the summer as we prepare for preschool!
