Spelling is one of those things that every child needs to know. Many of us remember studying (or memorizing) word lists for the weekly spelling test. Then promptly forgetting the words. This app sets out to make spelling memorable. Like its predecessor, Mr. Thorne's Spellbook 2: Master Edition gives kids a fun way to practice this essential skill.
Mr. Thorne's Spellbook 2: Master Edition, by developer Mr. Thorne Productions, is the latest addition to their educational app collection. Students practice spelling words from a variety of categories in a spelling test style quiz. After mastering each level, players collect artifacts to store in their vault. They can also earn awards for achieving certain levels within the game.
After entering up to four names, players can choose The Plains, The Forest, or The City from the main menu. Each setting has more than 20 different safes to unlock. Each safe is labeled with a different category of word. The categories are wildly varied from art to music to sports; from dinosaurs to metals to trees. Some categories are even more specific: irregular, tenses, synonyms for said, and compound words. There are over 72 different categories - each with 10 different words to spell.
Once players select a safe, they are presented with 10 blank spots. Tap each spot to hear the word spoken aloud. Users then have to type in the word and click done. After completing all of the words, they can check their work. The app marks the answers right or wrong and shows the correct spelling of incorrect words. Additionally, students can tap the hint button to see the word spelled. The safe is unlocked when students get 10/10 words correct.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
As a child I found spelling homework and tests to be tedious and boring. I wish that there had been apps like this to entertain me. The game-show like quiz will hold students' interest as they practice spelling words. I love how many different categories there are. Kids can choose categories that interest them, but are also exposed to new words. Not only is this app great for practicing spelling, it is an incredible vocabulary builder. It'd be a really cool upgrade to see example sentences for the words. The artifact earning aspect is fun, but not necessarily needed to make the app successful. The app is developed with children age 7 and up in mind, and some of the categories are absolutely appropriate for this age group. However, I won't lie, there were definitely words in there that I had to think twice about! (Rheumatic, onomatopoeia, anachronistic)
Overall, this app is a great way to engage kids in spelling practice. It is also an awesome way to build vocabulary. The words are definitely more appropriate for upper elementary to high school age. Also, while I had no trouble with the British narration, I can see American students having a hard time with some of the pronunciations of the spelling words. If you are looking for varied and versatile spelling practice, this app is a great tool for teachers and parents alike.
