Children seem to have an inborn connection with nature. Whether it’s chasing butterflies or blowing dandelion puffs, there are always things for them to explore in the natural world. A Place to Grow – Interactive Children's Book is a way for children (from age 3-8) to see nature from the point of view of a tiny seed. For its award-winning story and whimsical illustrations, Fun Educational Apps awards this app our latest Top Pick.Fun Educational Apps TOP PICKS
A Place to Grow (universal app, suitable for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch) was originally written as a children’s book by Stephanie Bloom. Her story has been adapted into an app by Bloom & Grow, Inc. It has the features we have come to expect in high quality story apps, namely a Read to Me option with a professional narrator, interesting interactive elements, and detailed artwork. It also has something else: a Record my Voice option that allows you to become the narrator. This is perfect for those times when you’re away at bedtime. Also included is a short video of the story.
The main character, a tiny seed with no name, is just like millions of other tiny seeds that take flight in the spring. After numerous failed attempts to plant itself, the little seed begins to doubt its ability to find a suitable place to grow. Following a couple of narrow escapes and a lot of floating, it finally lands in good soil, and like magic, it starts growing. The message is this: “Enjoy your journey, little friend. You’ll soon find your place to grow.”
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
In my opinion, the best story apps are the ones that rely on good storytelling first and foremost. Such is the case with A Place to Grow. In 2005, it won the Growing Good Kids - Excellence in Children’s Literature Award from the American Horticultural Society in conjunction with Junior Master Gardener, an international youth gardening program of the University Cooperative Extension network. The award is bestowed each year on an outstanding plant, garden, or ecology themed book. This tale is reminiscent of classics like “Are You My Mother?” and “The Hungry Caterpillar,” stories in which the main character is searching for something important.
A Place to Grow has so many reasons to recommend it. It is a captivating, yet simple story, with memorable illustrations and a clean user interface. In addition, it has a Record my Voice option and a video clip included right in the app. All these reasons make it a definite Top Pick for Fun Educational Apps. Together, you and your child can enjoy the adventure of the tiny seed over and over again.
