If you’ve ever played Peek-A-Boo with a baby, you know how delightfully they respond to the inflection changes in your voice. Where’s My Baby? is an app for toddlers that uses the same concept to present a “lostand found” story featuring mother animals and their babies. Fun Educational Apps awards Where’s My Baby? a Top Pick because it is a fun, easy-to-follow story that will tickle your child’s imagination.
Where’s My Baby? is a new app from CJ Educations and Blue Apple Books, available for the iPad. Designed for very young children (ages 1-3), it is reminiscent of stories like “Are you My Mother?” You can choose either the Auto Play setting (the pages turn automatically) or the Read To Me setting (you set the pace). In both settings, the words are highlighted as they are spoken. This is a nice touch that helps children recognize the connection between print and spoken words. The story concept is simple and
straightforward, with mother animals searching for their babies. Each one calls out the question, and her little one comes hopping (or waddling) back to her. As an added bonus, the correct names of baby animals are identified so your child can start recognizing the words chick, piglet, duckling, calf, and kid. Also included is Song Time, a version of the story is set to music, and Activity Time, a simple game for matching mother animals with their babies.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
My first impression of this app was the amazing artwork. The characters are distinctively drawn using vivid primary colors (Yes, the cow has blue ears and there is a rainbow chicken). Where’s My Baby? is full of activity: buzzing bees, flitting butterflies, birds circling. The mother animals blink, prick their ears, and wag their fluffy tails. Notice how subtly day turns into night at the end of the story. The audio portion shows a similar attention to detail. The sounds of the animal babies are actual recordings; other sound effects, like popping bubbles and bouncing springs, accompany each touch. Even the
background music is upbeat but not overpowering. This app delivers a rich, multi-sensory experience for your child.
Where’s My Baby? is an appealing story app that’s appropriate for tiny tots. It’s meant to be read over and over, and is likely to become a bedtime favorite. Both you and your child will appreciate the colorful illustrations and the noisy animals, but most of all, you’ll enjoy asking and answering the question, “Where is my baby?” This is Fun Educational Apps’ latest Top Pick.
