The initial page ties the directions right into the story. Flashing dots appear on each of the interactive elements of the story. Readers tap on the dots to find alphabet cards, locate items to put in Littler Critter's backpack, or touch to initiate even more animations. The dots disappear after being touched, so players know what they have left to do. The Menu button gives readers access to the alphabet cards, backpack, and map. Players are prompted to use the Menu when items are needed with flashing clues.
The story is truly interactive. Besides finding the hidden animations, readers must actually participate in the story. Little Critter and his family are headed to the lake for a vacation. Readers help the family along the way. Begin by finding hidden items for Little Critter to keep in his backpack - you never know when he might need these items (and he does!). Readers also choose the route that Little Critter and his family take by selecting destinations on the map. Along the way, users must help the family with various problems. Little Critter needs help tempting a horse off the road, fixing a car, getting ice cream, and more.
Throughout the story readers also have to find the 26 hidden alphabet cards. Each flashcard tells the letter and the word that starts with that letter, reinforcing letter skills. Built into the story are six additional mini-games. Readers practice spelling, colors, counting, and simple comprehension activities.
