There is also a Let Me Play option. This option also reads the story aloud, but instead of auto-advancing the pages, it allows the reader to explore the page freely. Unlock tons of different animations by tapping on the pictures. Cute interactions like yawning windows and mischievous characters are hidden throughout the pages. Additionally, tap on each word in the story and it is individually read aloud - great practice for new readers.
The app also has some great adult options. In the options menu, the Parental Tips section gives detailed explanations about the options in the story. The Teacher Resources section gives access to an iBook with all sorts of information and classroom ideas and lessons. There are also many different options to customize the app in the Options menu, allowing the adult to optimize the experience for the young reader.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
This app has a lot of customizable options that really appeal to me. I loved that I can choose the Read to Me option and set the story up almost like a movie. My son is prone to advancing through the pages of a story without really listening to the words or allowing the narration to finish. This app plays like a movie, ensuring that he gets the whole story. After he actually listens to the story, he can play with it as well. There are many, many interactions and animations to find and explore. There is even a hidden dragonfly on each page to find. The app is really cute and well developed. Additionally, the parent and teacher options really extend the app. It makes The Tortoise and the Hare a great educational tool as well.
Overall, this app has a lot to offer. It makes a familiar story into a fun and interactive experience. With movie-like characteristics and many cute animations and interactions, the app is engaging and fun for young readers and non-readers alike. It also leaves parent and teachers with many ways to extend the learning through additional activities.
The Tortoise and the Hare is available for download via the iTunes App Store - iPad and iPad Mini App
