Speech with Milo: Articulation Game Board, developed by Doonan Speech Therapy, is available for the iPad. Many speech/language therapists, myself included, are familiar with Milo from previous apps.
I have used both Speech with Milo: Sequencing and Speech with Milo: Prepositions and have found them to be motivating and engaging. This latest app, Articulation Game Board is exactly what the name implies. Each student gets to spin the dial and advance around the board, saying words containing their target sound. After each word, the clinician rates the production as correct, approximated, or incorrect. When the game is finished, the percentages are calculated and can be recorded or emailed.
This app has different versions to meet different needs. The regular version is available with over 500 pictures, targeting these common sounds: /f/, /v/, /k/, /g/, /s/, and /z/. An Early Sound Package contains 400 pictures and covers the earlier developing sounds ( /p/, /b/, /m/, /t/, /d/, and /n/) in all three word positions. It also includes /h/, /w/, /y/, and /ng/. Individual Sound Packs for /l/ and /r/ contain both single sounds in the initial, medial, and final positions, plus consonant blends. Voiced and voiceless /th/ are also available as an Individual Sound Pack. The PRO Version combines all of the different packages in one complete set.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
The Speech with Milo apps have been around for a few years now and have generated a lot of positive feedback in the speech community. In any discussion of therapy apps in blogs or articles, Speech with Milo is listed as a “must-have.” All are simple to use, simple for kids to understand, and provide the practice that leads to progress on goals.
The Articulation Game Board app represents a shift away from traditional flashcards toward a more child-friendly approach. The possibilities for using the game board are endless. Don’t worry, though, the app retains the ability to generate and analyze data, session by session.
Every speech/language therapist working in a public school needs to have activities that can elicit speech sounds. Articulation picture card sets are costly and typically aren’t motivating for children. With our target demographic being kindergarten through 3rd grade, the idea of using a game is extremely appealing. I plan to recommend Individual Sound Packs of this app to my students’ parents as part of their summer carryover packet. Conscientious parents are willing to purchase apps that will help their children “maintain the gain” over the summer. Hopefully, Speech with Milo: Articulation Game Board is only the first of many new apps like this to be added to the Speech with Milo brand. It is the latest Top Pick for Fun Educational Apps.
