Lewis & Clark by Gibbs Smith Education is a top pick as an educational app. Following the famous journey by Merriwether Lewis and William Clark, this app does a tremendous job of creating an engaging and beautiful experience. There are many great aspects to this truly educational app. |
Lewis & Clark is an extensive app with a ton of information about the famous explorers. The app opens to a main menu with lots of options for researching the topic. The Overview has the seven page story, perfect for giving the history and basic facts of the mission. Written in a book style with detailed maps and illustrations, this is a good place to start.
The Timeline section is an extensive exploration of the mission starting with the explorers birthdays and ending with their deaths. It has a detailed breakdown of dates pertaining to the mission and is accompanied by beautiful photographs. The Map section is a single page, but access the interactive component by tapping the dots along the route and readers can see what happened at major points along the journey.
The Biographies section has a detailed biography of Sacajawea, Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and York. Additionally there are small infographics for The Louisiana Purchase, Supplies, and Discoveries. The app has a ton of information that is absolutely appropriate for upper elementary and older students.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
Lewis & Clark is a really extensive app. The sheer amount of information in this app is great. I've already planned a lesson using this app for a researched based project for our fourth grade social studies students. The different types of information, ranging from a written account, to maps, timelines, and graphics will give all learning styles an opportunity to access the information. While using multiple sources for research is best practice, students could definitely complete a research project using just this app. With a full main menu and easy to swipe pages, this app is also very easy to use for upper elementary age students.
Overall, I was really impressed with the depth of instruction built into this app. There is so much information, but at a readability level that would be appropriate for students. With a variety of interactive components and many different ways to access information, this app is definitely a top pick for parents and teachers looking for an educational social studies app.
