Puppet Pals 2: All Access is a brilliant, creation based app, that has users create their own stories, act them out, narrate, and record them. With significantly more choices than the original Puppet Pals, this app has tons of creative opportunities. Begin by choosing one of six different locations: the West, a Farm, a Stage, Outer Space, the Arctic, or a City. Next choose one of ten different rides. Choose from vehicles like tractors or fire trucks, or from animals like horses or giraffes. Choose as many rides as your story needs!
Next comes the infinite task of choosing characters. This can be done in two ways. First, choose from 24 different actors that are preloaded. From various occupations like astronaut to doctor, to fictional characters like a super hero or caveman, to famous friends like Van Gogh or Shakespeare, the possibilities are truly great. BUT - you can also switch up the preloaded characters by scrolling through heads and bodies separately and combining them in any way. OR you can even add your own photos to the actors. Simply take or use a photo from your camera roll, trace the head to cut it out, trace the mouth to make it move, and it can be attached to any of the 24 bodies available. Infinite possibilities!
As the user begins to plan the story, players can also choose one of 18 different background songs to go along with the story, in addition to the sound effects some of the rides and locations already have. Once the background and characters are ready to go, users begin creating their own stories. Record the story as you narrate and move your characters around. Move characters closer and farther away, changing their sizes, have characters ride their given props, even watch as the mouths move as your narrate. Another great upgrade is that the characters arms and legs move as they are manipulated and can be positioned by the user to make more realistic looking stories. Characters and rides change direction as they are manipulated and most of the scenes scroll. There truly is so much to do with this app.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked (or Loved!)
As a teacher, wholly devoted to the use of product based apps and having students create finished products, I am absolutely in love with this app. There are so many brilliant ways to have students create stories, unique characters, and plots. I love the changes the developer has made to the app. With the huge additions to locations and characters, it's already great. But I love the idea of having the actors ride the props and move their mouths as the narration plays. Additionally, the ease of adding your own photos and talking heads is wonderful. Truly something that can be done independently by students. The quality of the finished product is outstanding. Can I be any more enthusiastic about this app?!
Overall, this is a top pick, for any parent or teacher looking to put a creation based app into their students' hands. The story ideas and generation that can and will take place by using an app like this will be a great educational tool. It has already found a place in next week's lesson plans and will become a staple of story creation in my classroom.
