Play Words Foods - Vocabulary Building App for Toddlers!
Play Words Foods is a vocabulary building app perfect for young children beginning to develop their language skills. As a teacher, I could also see this one being used with elementary aged ESOL students. The purpose of the app is to teach children the names of various fruits and vegetables in an engaging game.
The app is simple to use, perfect for young players. When it opens, simply click the play button and choose a level. The orchard and farm are free packs for trial. In each level, there are four fruits or vegetables. A written question appears at the bottom and is read aloud asking the playerto find a specific food. Tap on one of the four fruits or vegetables to find the right food. Luc, your monkey friend, drops into the picture either excited you found the food, or shaking his head and pouting if it's the wrong choice.
In app purchases are available for more fruit and vegetable packs. At the time this review was written, parents can purchase these additional packs: fridge, greenhouse, windmill, kitchen, or winter garden.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
This app has a cute gameplay that toddlers will find easy to navigate and engaging to play. It does a great job reinforcing the fruit and vegetable vocabulary. I really liked the wide variety offoods covered. The orchard pack throws the fig into the mix, already teaching about a fruit most kids may not be familiar with. I also like the built in hint. For kids struggling with the fruit or vegetable identification, they can use the color hint built into the question. Each question has the fruit or vegetable written in the color of the food. For example, the word fig was purple, the wordpotato brown. This built in hint is subtle enough to not immediately give away the answer, but enough to help a struggling user.
Overall, this is a cute app perfect for toddlers. It might also be beneficial to young English language learners. With a wide variety of fruits and vegetables covered, it gives kids exposure to a range of new words in a fun, game-like environment.
