Fun Educational Apps - TOP PICK!
Patterns is a high quality app with outstanding graphics and an engaging game play. Students choose a character and fill in a blank in a pattern by dragging and dropping images to either the beginning of the pattern, the middle, or the end. The game play is simple, but the there are a ton of patterns to practice with.
There is a practice mode for students to practice filling in the missing pattern piece. Aside from that, there are five different levels of play, each unlockable by getting a set number of stars for correct answers on patterns. Players earn a star for each of five patterns they solve correctly. Gain 12 stars to unlock the next level. Levels include Airplane, Food, Train, Car, and Outer Space.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
This app is massive, giving students a lot of practice creating and analyzing patterns. Each of the five levels has about 60 different patterns to try. There are several aspects my teacher's heart loved. First of all, the game is adaptive. This means the complexity of the pattern increases or decreases depending on whether or not the player is solving the patterns correctly. I love any app that adjusts to my students ability level, challenging them when they need to be, but backing off if things get too tough. Second, the app has students practice filling in the blanks at the beginning, middle, and end of given patterns. This is a whole different way of thinking about patterns. Most
pattern work has students give the next in a series, this app requires students to really analyze the pattern to figure out what piece must go in the beginning or the middle of a sequence. Additionally, just to solidify the top pick status, parents and teachers can access player records to see how students are doing when using the app independently.
A note to the developer: I love this app, and it remains a top pick, however I have had trouble with the app freezing repeatedly during play. Restarting the app typically fixes the problem, but it is definitely a glitch in the program.
Overall, this is a top pick as an educational math app. The sheer volume of patterns would make it a great app, but combined with the different ways of making students think about patterns and the adaptive nature of the game, Patterns by EdNinja is really top notch.
