Doodle Learning Maths by developer NineTwentyEight, is a new math app that has a unique interface. With a combination of drawing and art and a concentration style matching math game, students can get the best of both worlds with this app.
Doodle Learning Maths is a unique combination of math and art. The app opens to a menu where you can access your gallery of creations, read the instructions, or start a new experience. When playing, users select one of five levels: addition, subtraction, division, big numbers, or multiplication. Swipe to choose the numbers you want to focus on.
In each session, users first doodle their own pictures. Begin by choosing a background. Either use the camera to take your own photo or choose one of the preloaded backdrops. Choose from ten different scenes: from a desert to ocean, from a
haunted house to outer space. Next players choose any number of stickers to add to the image. With about 45 different stickers, all fitting different aspects of the various backgrounds, users have a ton of choices. Each sticker can be resized with a pinch and rotated with a two finger turn. In addition, players can draw and erase with the pen and eraser.
When finished, hit play and practice some math facts by playing concentration-style matching games with math problems and answers. Games vary in size from six cards to 20 cards to match. Each level is timed.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
This app has some pretty unique features. I enjoyed the doodling and my son loves any app that involves stickers. The teacher in me likes the flashcard style matching game focused on math skills. In each of the operations menus, swipe to choose what level of math facts need to be practiced. In the four basic math skills areas, choose combinations of facts involving the numbers one through eight. In the Big Numbers section, choose big addition one or two, or big subtraction one or two. The interface of this app is cute as well. A cute little rabbit interacts with the user throughout the doodling and the math. We particularly like when he blows up if you run out of time or when he throws stuff at you. I also like that with a quick look at the menu, adults can tell how quickly users are mastering the facts. Each level gets a score of 1 to 3 carrots, based on correct answers and time.
Overall, this is a cute math app. It gives good practice in matching basic math facts to answers. Adding the doodle component is a fun way to engage kids in the app before immersing them in the math aspect of the game.
Doodle Learning Maths is available for download via the iTunes App Store - iPad and iPad Mini App
