Tiny Countries is a top pick from one of my favorite educational developers, Tap To Learn. With a focus on world geography, this app is highly engaging, has a simple game play, and teaches geography skills in a fun way.
Fun Educational Apps TOP PICK
Tiny Countries stars Tiny Chicken as he embarks on an adventure to stop Dr. Evil from realigning the continents of the world to form a chicken. Coded clues lead Tiny from continent to continent where he must answer a variety of questions about the geography, flags, cities, and famous sites of each. With high quality graphics and engaging mini-movies in between continents, the app keeps players fully involved in the adventure.
Begin by helping Tiny to apprehend henchmen across the globe. Follow the bad guys by hopping from country to country in a two choice question game. Given 20 questions about several countries on the chosen continent, Tiny must hop to the correct country to answer the questions. Be quick about it though as the quiz is timed. The quiz focuses on the capitals, flags, famous sites, facts, and geography of each of 75 countries. While there are only two answers to choose from, the level of difficulty of the questions isn't to be underestimated. Answer incorrectly and land in the ocean. Land in the ocean three times and you are shark meat! Try the level again to master each continent.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
This app is super high quality and a top pick for its educational relevance. The app teaches geography in a way that is fun and engaging. Tiny Chicken is a lovable character - and familiar in my classroom as the developer has many great educational apps available. Tying the game play to a mystery/adventure makes the game even more appealing to young learners. The attention to detail in the graphics also makes this a top pick. While hopping from country to country across the ocean, jump over sunken ships, hungry sharks, even the remains of dinosaurs! The choices themselves also teach the students something. Sections of the quiz feature the country shapes, other sections feature a flag over the country shape. One last educational point I loved was the case files. Tap on each country to learn more about the capital, monuments, and other facts in individual files. The questions are not read aloud, which is the only feature I'd like to see changed. I'd like an option to have the question read to my low readers.
Overall, this app is a new approach to the standard geography app, and one of the best geography games I've used. The different questions and facts are well rounded and provide a nice overview of the countries featured. My students really enjoyed jumping from continent to continent - and honestly weren't even upset when they got eaten by the shark. Definitely a top pick for this teacher.
