Super Readers is a learning to read app by developer Jorge Sanchez. Young readers aged 5 -7 will be able to use this app to practice basic reading skills and fluency in this interactive app. With various levels and several book choices, students will find something appropriate for their reading level.
Teachers and parents alike will be able to use Super Readers as a fluency building reading app in classrooms and homes. Working from a Kindergarten level to a beginning second grade level, the app is appropriate for young readers aged five to seven. Learners have a choice of two books at a Kinder level, four books at a middle of first grade level, two books at an end of first grade level, and two books at a second grade level. As one would assume, the books get progressively harder from level to level.
The Kinder level books are appropriate for the youngest readers and have repetitious text in simple sentences. On each page of the book there are a few hidden interactions where items make noises or move. Readers can read the sentence themselves, have the entire sentence read aloud, or tap on the words to have each word read aloud as it is tapped. This provides struggling readers the chance to read a sentence and only get help on the word or words they do not know.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
One of the most unique features of the app is the choice for readers to record themselves reading each page and play it back. As a teacher, I love this feature because it gives students a chance to hear themselves reading. It has been proven that reader fluency goes up when students can hear themselves reading. Additionally, it gives the app a level of accountability. I can leave this app with students, ask them to record themselves, and go back to the app later to check on their fluency myself. Parents will enjoy the level of independence this provides children while still allowing adults to check in on their progress. Aside from this feature, the app also has a nice variety of levels for readers to access. It provides every level of first grade student a place to start reading, and has enough differentiation, that most students will find success with the stories.
Overall, Super Readers is a nice app for parents and teachers looking to provide students with an independent activity for practicing reading fluency. With different options for reading levels and a variety of stories, children will find success with not just the text of the story but also with fluency practice using the recording capabilities.
