Fun Educational Apps - TOP PICK
Montessori Geometry is a super in-depth app with multiple levels of instruction for students. The main menu offers several starting places: Shape Glossary, Games, 3D, Geometry Book, and My Points. Beginning in the Shape Glossary, students learn the names of 27 different two dimensional shapes, with a brief written definition, and the three basic types of angles. Shapes range from the basics: circle and rectangle, to the much more complex: curvilinear triangle and quatrefoil.
Move on to the Geometry cabinet to access a range of activities to explore the six basic shapes. Choose a drawer from the box to focus on a specific shape. Begin by shaking the iPad to drop puzzles pieces out of a simple shape puzzle. Move to a more difficult activity by tapping on the paper airplane. Here you will visit six different cities built of the specific shape. Tap as many of the hidden shapes as you can. If you tap at least 10 shapes you learn the name of the city. There are significantly more than 10 shapes hidden though! Use the magic paint brush button to brush over the picture and find the shapes you missed. Tap the person in the picture to access the next level of the activity. After tapping the person you are shown several examples of the shape with the option of seeing the shapes as solids, fat outlines, or thin outlines. Choose one of the examples to move to the same shape shown in 3D. Move your finger around the iPad to rotate the shape to see all of the sides. In this activity you can choose to see the faces, edges, or vertices of each shape. Manipulate the shape by turning on and off each of these settings to explore the 3D shape nets. You can also access these 3D activities easily by clicking on the 3D pencil in the main menu.
The Games section has a Match Them Up section with puzzles, shape sorter, and mix and match games for extra practice. The Shapes section has games called Easy Shapes, Find the Next Shape, Odd One Out, and Quiz. Easy Shapes is a simple tap the shape when you hear the name game. Find the Next Shape is great patterning activity. Odd One Out has students tap the shape that doesn’t belong. Lastly, Quiz is a quiz where students identify harder shapes by tapping on them when the name is called out. Players earn points for correct answers. Check your point total in the My Points section of the main menu.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
This app is extensive and an incredible teaching tool. As soon as I started moving through the activities, I was already building lesson ideas around how to incorporate this app into my geometry unit. The sheer depth of the teaching activities located in the Geometry book were amazing. I also really liked that the activities are scaffolded from easy to hard. Start with simple shape matching and move to full, independent exploration of three dimensional shapes. By allowing users to manipulate the shapes with their finger and change what aspect of the 3D shapes they are viewing, this app provides an experience that can only be rivaled by actually holding 3D models in hand. The games are also scaffolded beautifully. Start with simple shape identification, but move through patterning, differentiation, and a very complex quiz. Like other apps by this developer, this app will quickly become a classroom favorite.
Overall, this app made it as a top pick because of the depth and breadth of knowledge it provides users. This app can easily be used as an independent learning tool or incorporated easily as part of a lesson. Teachers can trust students are on task and learning during every second of use with this app – there are no distractions or gimmicks. This is a very solid teaching tool.
