There is a saying that goes something like this: “Happiness is food for the soul.” We all recognize the powerful connection between being happy and being well fed. This is one of the underlying messages in a new ebook for the iPad, entitled Henrietta is Hungry. For its engaging story, it’s affirming message, and its plucky main character, Fun Educational Apps gives it a Top Pick. |
Henrietta’s search leads her around the world, where she samples such local delicacies as snails, hot chili crab, and beet soup. Unfortunately, she finds something lacking in every morsel. Through the whimsical illustrations of Terence Garcia, the reader is drawn into her magical journey. On the verge of despair, Henrietta finally realizes what she has been craving all along. The final scene shows the international feast she organizes for all her friends, including her most scrumptious, stupendous dish among all the other delicacies.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
The measure of a great story is its ability to convey different messages to different readers. Some readers of Henrietta is Hungry will be fascinated with the food aspect of the story. How could you not be impressed with references to squidgy, soft snails and curried dahl? Others will appreciate Henrietta’s spunky attitude that’s channeled perfectly through the narrator’s voice. The image of Henrietta crinkling up her nose and intoning, “Not good enough,” is one that many parents will identify in their own children. Finally, some people will enjoy the multi-cultural perspective embraced throughout the story. As an adventurer, Henrietta is willing to try anything.
Summary-
Henrietta’s quest will appeal to all the girls out there who are determined to find that one special thing, whether that be in science, athletics, cooking, the arts, or any of a hundred other endeavors. For these many reasons, Fun Educational Apps awards a Top Pick to Henrietta is Hungry. Bon appétit.

Bio-
Julie Peterson - I am a speech/language pathologist (SLP) currently working in a school setting, serving children with special needs ages 6-14. One of my own daughters could have been the model for Henrietta’s character, so I can identify with her need to find that “most perfect thing”.
