Sophie's Drawing: Cute Learning How to Draw App for Kids!

Sophie’s DrawingSophie’s Drawing is a cute drawing app for your kids to learn how to draw step by steps basic pictures. With the help of Sophie’s magical pencil your children will have fun drawing 14 different pictures. Give it a try, it gives kids confidence and you will be surprised at what they can draw!

Drawing has always been a kids favorite. Sophie’s Drawing offers an original concept and teaches your kids how to draw step by step using three different scene. The first one - The Initial - is all about the basics. Once they know all the steps they can move on to more advanced drawing with the “the Sea” and “The Farm”. To draw, it’s easy! Simply follow Sophie’s magical pencil and if problem ... Sophie’s always there to help!

Sophie s Drawing 1

Sophie’s drawing has been tested by various reviewers from Review for Dev prior to the launch. Overall, it is a well perceived drawing app for kids. It is original and offers a great design, graphic and sound effects that keeps your kids engaged. Kids really like the various steps that are easy to follow! Some of the best comments are: “This is a super extra cute application with a strong appeal and lots of potential”; “It is easy to follow and simple to play! perfect for ages 2 to 5 years old (especially for little girls!)”; “it is a beautiful drawing app, the sounds are fun and compliment what is going on”; “Only app we have come across to date that is simple enough for the younger age group to follow and copy”

The downside, kids would like to see more pictures, possibilities to color in .... All features that may be added in further update.

Following are all the comments from Review for Dev - Note theses comments were made while the app was still in Beta version .... Some features might have already been included!

If you want to give it a try …. Lite version available

Sophie’s Drawing is available for download via the iTunes App Sore: iPad App

Nathalie C.: I'm a digital publishing consultant involved in apps for kids conception and improvment. I run an app review website, www.declickids.fr. I'm also a mother of 2 kids, the eldest one, Ulysse, helping me out with reviews. My secret plan is to make app's world better for kids all over the world, on app at a time (and your's is next !) ;)

What I liked
> I love the design, the graphics, the sound effects, the characters.
> I really liked to be able to control music and sound effects
> I liked the control system used to get better results very much
> I liked the colors offered (even if I think there coud be some more, or maybe some different tools, like pens, pencils, etc.)
> Kids usually get quite good results and this is very nice for them.
Suggestions
> I think it is sometimes very hard to follow magic wand instructions. For instance, it is not very natural to draw a square, a triangle, and moreover a circle the way the magic wand shows it. Circles, in particular, are very unnatural et complicated to draw with 4 strokes (at the beginning).
> It might be good to add some more drawings.
> The control system over drawings might be a little bit too much for certain kids, maybe you could add an option to activate / desactivate it.
> The line to follow disappears so quickly it is obvious some kids will miss it. Maybe you could add an "easy mode" where the dotted line stays in place and doesn't disappear?
> This app lacks a free zone, where you could reuse your new drawing skills, and maybe add colors or textures.
And that's it !
General opinion
This is a super extra cute application with a strong appeal and lots of potential, in any country. The graphics and sound effects are very nice. The control system over drawings might be a little bit too much for certain kids, maybe you could add an option to activate / desactivate
Dheeraj R.: I'm a 19 year old tech freak. I still live with my parents . But I have two awesome nephews and one niece. So i spend most of my time with them. My nephews are twins, 6 years old. My niece is 13 years old. I've been a huge fan of Apple for years now, and I love to review applications.

What I liked
>The background music was amazing, simply perfect. A lot of apps get it wrong choosing the right music for the background, but not this one.
>The sound made when I clicked on a particular option. I guess this was the sound of a human, and I really really liked it. Also, each option had a different sound attached to it.
>The basic idea of the app and the way it is expressed. I like the idea of teaching children how to draw, and also the way it was taught.
>The background image on the main menu is amazing. It's perfect for a kids' app like this. Also, there were objects moving in the background, so that made it even better.
>Sophie's wink. Although it doesn't really make a huge difference, I really liked it. Small things do matter!
Suggestions
>More drawings. This app needs so many more drawings. There are so many shapes that exist, and hardly 15 of them were in the app. If this app is to be sold in the App Store, there definitely should be more drawings.
>I'm not sure what to call it, but there was an option in each drawing where one step of the drawing would be automatically completed if the option was clicked, which was on the bottom right. I think there should be a maximum limit to each drawing. And probably, when the app is on the App Store, users could increase their limit of using that option by buying it as an in-app purchase.
>A tutorial video. Although it isn't necessary for this app, it's good to welcome new users by giving them a small tutorial about this app, and it's motive.
>The character Sophie, should probably be drawing the pictures, rather than the pen drawing the pictures on its own. The app is named Sophie's drawings, so why not make Sophie draw it herself?
>There weren't too many crashes, but I did experience one, while the octopus was being drawn. I completed the drawing, and just as I was going to click next, it crashed.
>Something like a quiz, on naming the shapes and other pictures. This would help the kids to learn while they draw, and would be really cool.
>Also, there should be some text under options. For example, after I finished a drawing, there were a few options down. It should be mentioned what they stand for, or at least it should be included in a tutorial video.
General opinion
It's a great app, a really nice idea. But I definitely expected more drawings, many more drawings. I'd give it a 3 out of 5 largely due to this. If this is going to be a paid application, the customers are going to want more than just 14 drawings. But on the whole, it's a good app. Although right now there isn't much wrong with the app, it's content seems to be really low.

What I liked
I really like the simplicity of this app! The feature that allows the magic drawing is great to reduce frustration when the child cannot get the line right! I like the different levels of difficulty it really widens that age demographic for this app. I like the email and photo options to save the drawings for the child view again later. The graphics are cute and original and the colors really pop on the screen!
Suggestions
This is going to be difficult because I think this is a very well thought out and executed app!
I would like to see the option to have all of the drawings unlocked rather then having to unlock them as you go. The child I tested it with found this annoying because she really wanted to draw the pig and she got bored with having to draw the others first. Another great improvement would be adding a coloring feature so after the child draws it, they can color it in and then watch it animate. I would suggest adding even more drawings, there aren't that many and a child could get bored with this app quickly. I think for the younger kids (two to five years) this app is great but up to seven years maybe a stretch. The child I tested it with a six years old and like I said, she became frustrated and bored quickly! I think a way to reduce this is to take the suggestions I made above about the coloring feature, unlocking all the drawings, and adding more drawings. Another suggestion would be to make a boy character and let the child choose which character they would like to have on the screen while they draw! I think this would make the app more popular with little boys who have girl phobias! (I tested it with a five-year-old boy and he commented that he wished there was a boy on the screen).
General opinion
I think this is a very well thought out and cute drawing app! It is easy to follow and simple to play! The app is perfect for ages 2 to 5 years old (especially for little girls!) The Magic Draw feature is really great for little ones who may not have as much fine motor control! I really like the cute animations that follow the completion of the drawing, it really makes the children smile!
Damon B.: I am an elementary educator who is interested in using digital resources in my classroom. I am in charge of several organizations ranging from youth sports to community agencies. I have an interest in all things digital and am always looking for ways to integrate tech into my life for organizational and collaborative purposes.

What I liked
This app is good for younger users to reinforce and help develop hand/eye coordination and practice their fine motor skills. The app has an intuitive idea which user draws a line based on predetermined path of stars created by a wand. Most drawing apps for kids are tracing solid lines. The sparkling trail gives the user a bit of a challenge to recreate the line. The app is fairly easy to navigate with a variety of colors to draw with. Once the drawing is complete, kids can see how close their lines were to an animated character of the shape. I did enjoy seeing the characters at the end of each drawing. I appreciated that each drawing was just a little more challenging than the last. The chance to use a magic wand for you is a nice touch for those hard to draw lines. Kids will like being able to use many different colors as well as adjusting the thickness of the line. The ability to save pictures upon completion makes a nice way to capture kids' artwork.
Suggestions
The main frustration for me was the inconsistency of successfully completing a line. There were instances when the line wasn't even close to the trail and it was excepted, while other lines had to been redrawn several times despite being exactly on the trail. This was the case with the shorter lines. I can see younger kids getting really frustrated with it. There were certain sounds made by Sophie when the line was not successful that seemed to be in a whiny tone. It got really annoying to hear repeatedly on those hard to draw lines.
Users should have to complete one level at a time before having the other available to them. For example, the shapes section must be completed before the "Sea" category is available. More categories would be a nice addition in future updates.
A possible feature could be a sensitivity level for younger and older users. For younger users the lines can be close to the star trail to be successful while a higher sensitivity level would require more advanced or older users to be more precisely on the path.
Another category to click on could be a "Sandbox" style mode in which users can free draw their own pictures using the colored pencils and thicknesses available to them with still the option of saving the picture to the Camera Roll.
I'm not so sure that the email option is necessary. Young artists aren't going to be able to email to others anyway.
General opinion
Overall, this app could be a fun way to entertain younger users and enforce hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills while still challenging older more coordinated users. The idea that the drawings increase in difficulty will make this seem much more like a game to some users. There are some issues with the consistency of success rates on some of the lines that could get frustrating to some users. This app has a lot of potential to expand in possible future updates.

Samantha M.: I am a mother to an adventurous two year old! I am always on the lookout for educational and creative apps for him. I am also a Kindergarten teacher looking for great apps for my all of my students whether it be for students with special needs, English language learners, or even struggling readers.

What I liked
I really loved the concept of this app! I think the guided drawing is a great take on traditional drawing apps. I love the three choice so far; the sea, the farm, and hello. This is unlike any other drawing app that I have used before and by far the cutest! I also like the background music that accompanies the drawing. In addition, I like that there is a magic wand to help when you get stuck on a drawing.
Suggestions
While this is a great app, there are a few improvements that could be made. The first improvement would be to include a sketch of the drawing in the background of the image. It is sometimes difficult to picture the whole drawing when all you can see if the current line. Sometimes, the line disappears so quickly that you can't tell what was supposed to be drawn. Also, the brush seems to be way too difficult. I tried the app out myself after letting my son try it out. I noticed that he would get very frustrated with the sensitivity of the drawing. When I drew myself, I also found it frustrating and the lines had to be exact.Often times I traced the exact same line and the drawing was still rejected. In addition, I think there should be more than three options of drawings unless this is going to be a free app. There just doesn't seem to be much content. Finally, I understand the idea behind the progress of the level of difficulty, but I don't want to trace 4 pictures in order to get to the last picture. My son wanted to trace the sheep and we had to trace all of the drawings before it just to get to the sheep. It would be helpful if all drawings were available upon purchase rather than working up to them.
General opinion
Overall, this is a great drawing app. I would say that it is currently geared more towards ages 4 or 5 and up based on the current level of difficulty. Nonetheless, it is a beautiful drawing app. When you get stuck, have no fear because Sophie's magic wand will help you out!
Lizz M.: My name is Lizz and I am a librarian. A HUGE focus of mine is to integrate iPads and apps into the Children's department - so I've looked at hundreds of apps so far. In addition, I am hugely tech savvy and love trying out new apps! I use my phone/iPad for EVERYTHING! and I look forward to finding new apps I'll love and love to tell others about!

What I liked
This app is beautiful, I LOVE the artwork. It reminds me of some of my favorite picture book illustrators. Obviously a lot of development time was spent on the appearance of the app and it shows. The way this looks is why people will buy this app. In addition, the sounds in the app are fun (music, Sophie saying "yea", with the exception of her moaning when you don't it it her way) and I enjoyed all the effects. The helps (once you find them) are nice to use.
Suggestions
Sophie is too particular! I struggled to make my lines "exactly" the way she wanted them (I think I did the circle four times before she stopped moaning at me). For a young child just learning to draw their shapes, this is a little discouraging. I would like to see some tracing done to start. It helped that I could "guess" what the shape was when I started, but a child will not be able to do that. I think that they either need to trace or at the very least, have a picture to follow. My drawings looked NOTHING like Sophie's, which is fine, but they looked silly on top of the cute animated versions.

Sophie's "discouraging" sounds when you don't do it her way make her sound a little spoiled, I can picture her stomping her foot. I can envision children everywhere beginning to imitate this sound.

The "menu" bar across the bottom (with the colored pencils) is sometimes difficult to make come up and other times it comes up without touching the tip of the star. I think this is too small and could be made larger for kids to find.

There is no "help" instructions (as in, where do I find them). I found the "helps" on accident and they were nice to use (cute sound effect), but no one tells you they are there. I realize when Sophie warns that you have drawn too much the star bounces up - but I thought it was encouraging you to erase the "problem" area. I would like to see some basic instructions come up at the beginning or at least in the settings page for parents to review when trying to figure the game out with their kids.

I would add a "free draw" section where you can make whatever pictures you want. I would also like to draw Sophie, she is adorable!

Overall the game is fairly frustrating and, although it visually is appealing, it does seem to be something that would appeal to children. The ones old enough to understand it will find it too simplistic and the ones who would possibly enjoy it will become frustrated with the stringent guidelines for drawing.
General opinion
The game is beautifully drawn and animated. The sounds are fun and compliment what is going on. However, the game needs some levels - one where you trace the shape, and one where you do what the game already does. Also, there should be a picture of what you are making that you can bring up. Personally, I wouldn't pay money for this app - it is too restrictive and discouraging. However, it is beautiful so your audience may be attracted in that way.

Michelle W.: I am a mother of two children ages 5 and 7. I like to see what educational and fun apps that are out for them to play. Puzzle apps are a big hit with our 5 year old right now, while my 7 year old likes educational or art type apps.

What I liked
The tutorial is great. It gives a step by step tutorial to draw each shape. What makes the tutorial great is the fact that it gives enough freedom so that the user don't have to follow it exactly but it will let the user know that they did something wrong if they go to far from the intended action. I also love how Sophie facial expression change based on how well you did in the tutorial. The art style of the app really complement the app well.
Suggestions
I don't know how much the app cost but if it cost more than $0.99, I would like to have more objects tutorial. I feel that my kids can go through all the different objects fairly fast. Although I understand that the developer is trying to get the user more involved by having them unlock an object before they can draw the next but I would prefer if everything is unlock from the beginning. My son waned to draw the pig but he couldn't do it because it wasn't unlock yet, instead of going through each of the previous object, he instead lost interest and move on to different app. Perhaps the developer can add something in the settings that allow parents to unlock all of the object right away. I know that I said the freedom that the tutorial is giving the user is one of the thing I really like about this app however it also created a problem for the app. I was able to create a whale that doesn't really look like the whale that the tutorial was trying to get me to draw but I don't know if there is really anything te developer can do about it. I also find that the buttons in the menu at the bottom of the screen to be really unresponsive at times. I have to tap the button multiple times before it register the click.
General opinion
This is a great drawing tutorial app for kids between 3 - 7 years old that offer a really great step by step tutorial of drawing objects. There are enough objects that will keep the kids interested from basic shapes to sea and farm animals. The tutorial give enough freedom that the kids won't get frustrated.

What I liked
Fantastic app that isn't too hard nor complex for younger children. Really enjoy the variety of shapes and the restrictions that ensures child masters one shape/picture before tackling the next.
Children enjoyed the choice of colouring pencil/crayon. Seeing their picture coloured in and animated at the end was quite a highlight. Positive feedback from Sophie was enjoyed by child. Great to see no links to Facebook etc.
Suggestions
Would like to see the sparkling trail for children to follow once watched to be a more prominent colour. Potentially even becoming a solid line to trace after a few failed attempts rather than/as well as option to have Sophie complete the stroke.
Would also be great if there was a voice naming the items the children are about to draw as well as the word written to add extra educational value. Also maybe verbal instructions such as "watch and then draw the same line/stroke" even if only at the beginning of each shape. Would be great if eraser was able to be controlled to just erase minor parts.
Strongly dislike the ability to email the pic as this can be quite irritating for a parent who has their own email account on the iPad. The option to turn this off etc would remedy this issue otherwise it would sadly not be an app safe for our iPad with work email accounts on it.
Some finer parts in the pictures were exceptionally hard and took me as an adult multiple frustrating attempts ie chimney, feet on pig etc.
Would like to eventually see more pictures for children to draw in order to hold long term interest in the app. Depending upon original purchase price, I would be happy to purchase extra pics as an in app purchase, particularly seasonal pictures.
General opinion
A fantastic drawing app for young children. Only app we have come across to date that is simple enough for the younger age group to follow and copy. Great variety of pictures that hold a child's interest especially the reward of seeing their picture coloured/animated upon completion. An app that will hold a child's interest and one that they will come back to frequently.
Courtney D.: My name is Courtney and I am an SLP. I love working with children of all ages, but find I have a particular passion for children with special needs. I love technology and the impact it can have on the students in the therapy room.

What I liked
I love the simplicity of the app. I love that the drawings are broken down into smaller portions, which allows the user to be more successful. As someone with little artistic talent, the iPad most definitely doesn't make things easier, but the breakdown allows for me, as an adult, to have success. The extra visual prompt is also helpful. I like the use of hints, or fill ins, for those instances where the user struggles for accuracy.
Suggestions
When the user is not able to successfully make the movement as outlined by the magic wand, a noise is made and the error fades. I like that the user has the opportunity to try again; however, it would be fantastic if the user received verbal feedback with encouragement. There were instances where I could not get the tail of the pig accurately and finally just gave up because I didn't want to hear that noise again. Also, maybe a reward when the user makes an exact stroke would be an additional treat? An extra "magic" or something? Maybe a rating scale to determine how they truly did with the movement?

I like that the user can begin by working on shapes; however, the circle is not a one stroke movement. When the user creates the stick person, the circle portion is a one stroke movement. Is there a reason for the inconsistency?

I like the extensive drawing opportunities that the user is able to partake in; however, the other extreme is not available. I think about the straight lines, curved lines, etc. that are not tapped into. Maybe a "practice" section that is not a "must-do" would be valuable.

Does the user earn "magic" by completing a drawing? Can they complete the drawing more than once to earn more "magic"? Maybe a little synopsis that could be accessed to explain what the "magic" is used for would be helpful. The only information I found was within the "?" symbol, so if it is present, maybe making it a little more visible would do!
General opinion
I enjoyed this app! I found myself trying to perfect every stroke so that the lines matched the object when the drawing was complete. I think this is a great application to work on fine motor movement. If our occupational therapists within our district had access to an iPad, I would surely recommend this one to them! For now, I will commend you on a job well done! I think this is a fun app with great potential!
Mandy N.: I have three special needs children that I love dearly. They have learned soo much from apps and love to share about apps that they use as well as apps I use. Children can learn soo much with the iPad when used as a teaching item as well as a fun gaming device :)

What I liked
I really like how this app teaches traceing. My five year old has a real problem traceing shapes and this app helps a lot with that. I like how the sparkles stay there to show your child where the line is to go. The app is simple to use that even a toddler/early preK can use it easily. I like that your child can pick other colors while making the shapes since I think that makes it more fun for them.
Suggestions
I would love to see more shapes added to the app over time. I would love to see more basic shapes added in the app and maybe some letters or numbers as well. I found no bugs in the app while my children were playing it. It is a little touchy in spots with the tracing where sometimes it will take one line but won't take the next even though it's not off the traced line. I would also like to see a boy theme added or an additional app made that had more of a boy theme since the fairy is more directed towards the girls. My youngest had no problem with this but my seven year old kept saying it was a girls app only. The app is well done with the interactive parts but I would also like to see on the main screen some more interactive parts. My five year old kept pressing things all over the app thinking they should be able to move but they couldn't. There is many more pictures that could be added in the app to make it even better then it already is. You could also add the ability to color in the pictures once your child has traced them but still keep the interactive ability after they have finished. I think this would add just a little bit more to the app for the older children that would use it :)
General opinion
Overall this app is great. I love how the pictures come alive after your child has traced the designs. There is a fair amount of pictures for your child to complete in the app. The basic shapes that are included are wonderful for PreK skills. I love how the shapes are easy to trace and enjoy :)
