Fun Educational Apps is committed to finding the best apps available for children. This time the search led us all the way to Norway, where we found this gem. SirMania- Play & Learn, created by Tom Greger Knutsen, is a popular educational app in Norway. We agree that it is well worth checking out.
Fun Educational Apps TOP PICK
What the App Does-
SirMania-Play & Learn is actually a collection of 10 (yes, ten!) different activities designed for children 2-6 years old, available for iPhone, iPad aand iPod Touch. If you see only nine activities, it’s because the tenth one appears as a reward when enough tokens are earned. With amazing artwork by Anja Bredesen, this app uses outdoor settings as backdrops for its antics. Cute characters hop, peek, honk, prance, cluck, and scramble around. Your child can choose from among many activities, including assembling an animal puzzle, matching the animal to its shadow, finding hidden animals popping up everywhere, counting sheep, and catching worms (I kid you not). I would encourage parents to introduce their children to all ten activities, because the best ones have little secrets and hidden buttons concealed in them.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
My expectations for a Top Pick app are simple. It must be easily understandable, designed with a clear purpose in mind, rated as a good value for the cost, and above all, engaging for its target audience. I found SirMania- Play & Learn easily achieved all four goals. Another positive point is that it has been meticulously translated into English. Awkward translations can be a stumbling block for apps that are developed for an international market; fortunately, that is not a problem here.
I appreciate the developer’s sense of playfulness that is evident throughout each activity. For instance, he doesn’t merely add a snowman to his winter scene; his snowman starts singing, “Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow…” as the flakes start to fall. In another scene, the moose appears, looks at you, makes a goofy face, and runs away. These are small touches, but their cumulative effect is very positive for me.
Conclusion-
SirMania- Play & Learn is a solid app choice. It covers basic preschool concepts in a friendly, slightly silly way. From an educational perspective, I especially like “Find the Weasel” and “Counting Sheep” because they provide good practice in visual tracking and one-to-one correspondence. You will like SirMania for its solid educational foundation, and your child will like SirMania because it’s silly and fun. As my daughter likes to say, “Everybody wins!” (Be aware that there is some mild “bathroom humor” displayed in the app occasionally, which might offend more sensitive viewers.)
