Meet the Insects: Forest Edition - Top Learning App for Kids

Mzm.kesyyqcs.175x175-75Meet the Insects: Forest Edition is beautifully done and a top pick as an educational app.  Developer NCSOFT has gone above and beyond with this app full of gorgeous photos and videos, tons of facts, learning games, and more.  Budding scientists, backyard bug enthusiasts, and curious minds will love this encyclopedic app.

Fun Educational Apps - TOP PICK

Meet the Insects- Forest Edition 4Featuring a range of bugs that make their homes in the forest, Meet the Insects: Forest Edition, is a well put together app full of information.  Users find themselves immediately drawn in by the stunning graphics of the app.  In an almost encyclopedic fashion, the app allows users to explore multi-media, fact boxes,  insect stories, observation journal, or quizzes.

Beginning with the See the Insects section, users climb six levels of a forest tree exploring each order of insect available.  Click on realistic pictures of each insect to access fact files on the individual bugs.  Each fact box has photos and information on the specific insect.  Looking for more general information?  Then check out the Insect Story for an animated story about Insects.  Information includes what they are, life cycles, colors, patterns, and other information.

Meet the Insects- Forest Edition 5The Multimedia section has some stunning photos and narrated videos of many different types of forest insects.  Sort them by photos, videos, or all.  Test your knowledge of the photos by accessing the quizzes.  One quiz asks the player to identify the photo of the named insect.  The XO quiz has players answer true/false style questions about insects in general.

Backyard bug enthusiasts can access the observation journal and type their own entries.  Enter the date, location, mood, weather and notes.  Even add photos your findings.  Save the journal to access at a later date to see what discoveries you've made.

What Fun Educational Apps Liked

Meet the Insects- Forest Edition2The sheer size of this app is impressive in itself.  I'm not a particular bug-lover, but found myself enthralled by the photos, videos, and facts I learned.  For young users who find this topic interesting, this app is a wonderful way to engage learners.  The layout and setup are easy to navigate, and fit the tone of the app.  For instance, going from order to order of insect, you have to turn pages by having a bug fly up the tree.  Little details like this (all in just stunning graphics) really immerse the user in the insect world.  The facts are simple enough for younger users to read and understand, but have a ton of new knowledge for adults as well.  The photos and videos look beautiful on the iPad and are easy to swipe through.  I also loved the observation journal.  What a neat way to engage a child in exploring their own surroundings.

Overall, Meet the Insects: Forest Edition is a top pick for its educational content, beautiful graphics, and wealth of information.  The app is easily used by young learners and adults alike.  Teachers could easily incorporate exploration style learning using this app as well.  Meet the Insects does a great job of tying an educational app into real world exploration.
