Mathly Hollows is a video game style math fact game by developer 8DWorld Inc. Players practice mental math to stop monsters from taking over their town. Using any of the four basic math calculations or all four together, players solve math facts at a Kindergarten -through third grade level.
Mathly Hollows focuses strongly on students practicing mental math as quickly as possible to beat the monsters. Players choose one of the four basic math calculations or choose to practice all at the same time. Users can further customize their level by choosing from 2 Kindergarten, 2 first grade, 2 second grade, or 2 third grade levels.
After choosing a level, game play opens on a path in the town of Mathly Hollows. A wizard owl shoots magic spells with correct answers at monsters from Monster Hollow attempting to take over the town. Get a little help from your friends by placing friends on the path to slow the monsters down. This is important as the monsters begin to pile up on the path. The faster a player does the mental math, the faster the monsters are defeated. Defeat the given number of monsters at each level to open up the next level of play.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
This app is a different style of math facts practice. After using so many flash card style apps, it's refreshing to have a new take on math. The almost video game like style of play will certainly engage students. In fact, I've found anything that has levels to unlock is particularly engaging for students. I also really like the focus on mental math. Fact fluency is such an important part of students' success in higher math skills. Having an app like this where students must solve problems quickly in order to defeat the monsters really helps to build that fact fluency. I also liked how many different levels users can choose to play at. When trying out this app, I chose to practice all four skills together. Each level I tried gave a really balanced mix of each skill. I was particularly impressed with the level of difficulty at the third grade level. Even I struggled a bit with the mental math at that level. I know my students will definitely be challenged by this level of play.
Overall, this app has a video game style of play that young players will find engaging. With a wide range of skill levels to practice and a strong emphasis on mental math, this app has high educational quality. Teachers and parents alike will be pleased with the level of difficulty this app offers for young math students.
