As an educator, I believe that apps provide children with a wide variety of experiences, from learning new skills to having fun. What’s unique about the Global Game Changers is its emphasis on instilling the values of caring for others and being a voice for positive change. Getting a high score on a game feels good for a minute, but helping the less fortunate feels good for a lifetime, and it’s never too early to start the conversation.
This app is the digital companion to the book of the same title written by Jan Helson and illustrated by Rachel Annette Helson. The main characters include Little Big Heart, a superhero who flies across the country to find children helping others; Global Girl, the person in charge back at Headquarters; and Pixel, the trusty canine companion with a helicopter jet-pack strapped to his back. Their mission is to show kids how to be superheroes in their own community. With this app, parents and grandparents can engage children as young as 5 in a discussion about the importance of getting involved. Studies have shown that good character is instilled at a very young age.
The technical aspects of this app are professionally done. The characters are engaging and age appropriate, and they model behavior that little ones can understand. There is a “Read it Myself” option and a “Read to Me” option to accommodate different levels. Interactive screens let the child send Little Big Heart soaring over buildings and through the clouds.
