Many parents are already fans of the Ansel and Clair Series of educational apps by Cognitive Kid, but for those of you who haven’t yet had the pleasure of meeting them, you are in for a wonderful surprise. Ansel and Clair are child-like aliens from a distant galaxy who have come to Earth to learn about history. For this trip, they have landed in the Thirteen Colonies just before the American Revolution.
FUN EDUCATIONAL APPS TOP PICK
What the App Does-
The app begins with Ansel and Clair zooming toward Boston. Once they land, they are greeted by a series of historical figures that describe an event leading up to the Revolutionary War. At the end of each scene, there is a short game, activity, or quiz that reviews the information. All of the activities are very child friendly and designed for ages 6-12. Before leaving the scene, there is also an opportunity to snap a photo to be placed in the child’s scrapbook. Then it’s on to the next scene. Navigating through the screens is accomplished by following blinking arrows and pointing fingers. A tutorial at the beginning of the app explains how it works in a very clear manner.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
It’s hard for children to understand historical concepts of time and distance. Ansel and Clair’s Ride with Paul Revere is designed to take children to an unfamiliar time, and teach them about the events that shaped our nation. Included along with the narration are pictures of actual historical artifacts and photos, which lend authenticity to the app. The authors have researched their facts carefully and presented them in a step by step sequence, starting with Paul Revere’s silversmith shop. From there, they whisk Ansel and Clair to the Boston Tea Party, and then to the old North Church where they join Paul Revere for the ride of his life. They even help light the lanterns to signal “One if by land, two if by sea.”
Conclusion-
I highly recommend Ansel and Clair’s Ride with Paul Revere. It is an excellent example of how a well-crafted app can enrich a child’s knowledge of the world, and do it in an entertaining way. Think about it: this app could spark your child’s lifelong love of history, because it makes the subject so real. Cognitive Kid has done it again.
