Letter Muncher is a great new educational app from developer MerryFools, LLC. With a focus on beginning letter sounds, this app is a great tool to use with preschoolers just starting to understand letter concepts. Engaging game play and a hungry little monster make this app perfect for the 3-6 year old crowd.
Beginning phonics, the study of letter sounds, is an important pre-reading skill. Letter Muncher turns an essential skill into a fun game, that is fully controllable by parents. Players are given a letter tile and five pictures, each with a label below. Tap the letter to hear the letter name and sound. Tap each picture to hear the name of the item. Feed the items that start with the selected letter to the little purple monster. Put the items that do not begin with the letter in the recycling bin to get rid of them. With such simple game play, this app is perfect for pre-readers.
Parents can customize the app depending on their child's ability level. In the parent options section, parents can choose as many or as few as the letters as they'd like the child to practice. Additionally, they can choose to utilize the voicing options allowing children to hear the words if the pictures are tapped. There are six slots to customize game play, allowing for six different users. Progress reports are also available.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked:
Letter Muncher is a really nice app for teaching and practicing beginning phonics. With the cute little monster, it is engaging for the preschool and Kindergarten crowd. There are over 500 pictures symbols for 24 different phonetic sounds (including ch, sh, and wh). This app has a lot to offer parents and teachers. As both, I like that I can customize which letters my child is working on. I also really like the scaffolding the app offers. My child can match the pictures to the beginning sound at first by looking at the picture labels and finding the beginning letter to match. As he progresses in the game, he can listen for the sound as the word is said aloud after the picture is tapped. Eventually, I'll shut the voicing feature off and he will have to identify the beginning sounds by knowing the name of the picture and what sound is at the beginning. This makes the app useful as my child's reading and phonics skills grow.
Overall, Letter Muncher is a great tool for teaching and practicing beginning phonics. Parents and teachers alike will appreciate the different levels of independence this app offers. With phonics being such an important step in the reading process, this app has found a way to make it engaging and fun for the young crowd. This is an app I can easily see using time and again with both my son and some of my pre-reading students.
Letter Muncher is available for download via the iTunes App Store: Universal App
