Developer Sound Apps Berlin has created a tongue twisting app called Twist Your Tongue - English Tongue Twisters . Featuring 50 new and old tongue twisters, this app reads aloud the alliterations, but also allows you to record yourself attempting them as well. With such a wide variety of tongue twisters, the app will highlight some favorites and have you practicing new ones out loud.
Twist Your Tongue has a simple interface that is easy to navigate. The app opens to an alphabetical list of 50 tongue twisters. Click on any one to explore. The title of the alliteration is at the top, with the twist itself hidden. From here you can pull down the tab to reveal the words, or simply play the twister at either fast speed or slow speed. At the top, you can also choose to record yourself reading the tongue twister and play it back to see how accurate you are.
From the main screen, you can also choose Random to hear the tongue twisters randomly recited in an ongoing loop. You can also choose to create your own alliteration. Type in a title, the twist, and then record yourself reading your creation. If you like the sound of it, save it to the library and your tongue twister will be added to the alphabetical list on the main screen. One last note - this app is also available in French, German, and Spanish.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
This app has such a wide variety of tongue twisters. I've never heard most of them and enjoyed hearing the different narrators reciting them. I liked that you could change the speed from fast to slow - though the slow speed is still pretty fast! The option of recording yourself reading the tongue twisters would make a great reading fluency activity as well. As a teacher, I loved that this app is actually a product based app - meaning that I can have students actually create something while using this app. I really like the option of creating your own alliteration from scratch, recording it, and then having it saved to the library. Additionally, the twister could be shared via Twitter, Facebook, or email. This creation feature makes it an app I'm already planning a lesson around.
Overall, this app has a simple interface making it easy to explore and use. I will note that on my initial download, the app did not play or record, though after restarting my iPad, it worked beautifully. The developers were quick to answer my email and offer support. I'm excited to use this app in my classroom and believe my students will also enjoy it.
Twist Your Tongue - English Tongue Twisters is available for download via the iTunes App Store: iPhone/iPod App compatible iPad
