If you are looking for a math app perfect for practicing mental addition, then Fishy Math should be a top pick. This app combines mental math practice with a concept similar to Pac-Man style game play. Players navigate a fish through a maze, trying to get to the bubble with the correct answer while avoiding the wrong answers and the pesky shark.
Developers Math Game Time have created a fun and engaging way for kids ages 6 and up to practice math skills. The app has a singular purpose of practicing two digit plus one digit mental addition. (Though it would be great if future updates included more math skills!) Players are given a maze similar to an old school Pac-Mac scene. Between 2-4 bubbles each with a potential answer escape from the middle of the maze. Players naviage a little orange fish by either using arrow keys or swiping to guide him through the maze. Try to eat the bubble with the correct answer. Don't eat the wrong answers or get caught by the shark (at later levels) or it's game over.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
This app focuses solely on one skill - but it does it very well. The problems are all two digit plus one digit math problems, and to solve them mentally kids will need a solid base in addition skills. This makes the app most appropriate for students at least aged 6 and up. With the first level only having two answer choices and later levels having up to four answer choices and a rogue shark, the level of difficulty increases with the more problems answered correctly. If the player answers incorrectly, the maze resets just two answer choices. Also, the video game style of the app is highly engaging for young students. I love hiding math practice in games that kids love to play.
Overall, this app is a top pick as a math app. With its engaging maze style scene, and the easy to understand concept, this app is one that kids can play extensively and not get bored. With a specific focus on mental addition, I anticipate this app will be a staple in my math class.
