The Lion and the Mouse by Kid-mind Studios is a new storybook app for iPad featuring a familiar tale with cute graphics and animations. Kids will enjoy the surprising interactions and relive a childhood fable through an interactive ebook.
Based on Aesop's fable The Lion and the Mouse by Kid-mind Studios is a fresh take on an old story. The app opens up to a menu giving the options to have the story read aloud by a pleasant sounding narrator, read the story to yourself, or have it read as a bedtime story. This last feature was kind of neat. It reads the story aloud with just a simple sky and clouds background. No animations or page turning. It sets up the story so that a parent could leave it playing as a little one drifts off to sleep.
The story has at least one animation on each page, and often has a reader interaction as well. Easy navigation has you swipe back or forth to go from page to page. There are several pages with in-depth reader interactions. Guide the mouse through the mouse hole by twisting and turning the iPad. Search for the lion's trap using a pair of binoculars. Also, try and catch the mouse with a fork as the lion tries to eat him. Cute interactions spread throughout the app keep the reader engaged.
What Fun Educational Apps liked:
This app is a nice twist on a familiar fable. The graphics and interactions are cute and fun. I liked that several of the pages had a few different scenes before having to turn the page. I also liked that the specific reader interaction pages were spread out evenly through the story so that readers stayed engaged. There wasn't too much interaction to detract from the story itself. I also liked the option to have it read as a bedtime story. I've not seen this option before. A parent could set this up out of reach of a child and have the story read aloud as they drift off to sleep without fear of kids getting sucked into the graphics or interactions. That was a really neat aspect of this app.
Overall, this app will make a cute addition to your interactive book collection. Apps that retell popular fables seem to be popular, and this one will be no exception. With it's cute graphics, nice sound track and narration, and fun interactions, this ebook will be a hit with kids from age four to eight.
