Simplex Spelling Phonic is based on the popular Simplex Spelling HD and offers great help for kids to learn how to spell and read over 450 high frequency words. All the words are split into 42 lists.
Each list focuses on a group of word that uses the same sound and letter combination. Each list starts with a lesson where kids can listen to the pattern and sound rule of this specific sound. Moving to the next step, kids need to type the words using the onscreen key board. Each word is spoken and then used in a sentence. Kids can either type the word using the onscreen keyboard or drag the letters to the right place. Note if the letter is in the right place it turns green, misplaced it turns blue and if the letter does not belong to the words ... It turns red.
Simplex Spelling Phonics automatically records your kids progress giving you a way to monitor what they have learn and what needs to be revisited.

The method offered helps improve English spelling and reading. Each list is a lesson, a building block to learning how to read and spell and include the different phonograms, sounds, and spelling rules. Learn and master all the blocks to become a spelling champion!
Kids can use Simplex Spelling Phonics independently as all instructions are spoken. The lessons give rules on pronunciation to help kids say the word after they spell it. When spelling a word your kids will automatically know if a letter is in its right place thanks to the colour coding used. It helps build literacy. We also liked that each word is used in a sentence which helps Kids improve their vocabulary and comprehension.
It offers a set lists of word and does not give you the flexibly to use your own words. We tend to agree as the goal of this app to is teach and learn the basics behind spelling. Each list corresponds to a group of words and adding other words would confuse the kids. It is not a spelling app to practice instead it is a teaching app where the goal is to learn the rules and set lists of high frequency words.
Other features we liked are the mail icon, which allows you to contact Pyxwise Software if you have questions or concerns. The 2 options on the keyboard ABC or QWERTY. Multiple users that allows you to follow the progress for each kids. .
Overall, Simplex Spelling Phonics 1 is a great spelling app using the phonic approach that we like! Kids can learn the foundations and basic rules behind spelling and thus ensure long term results. It is clearly presented, easy to use. It is a learning app in the sense that it does not offer any gimmick or animation, the whole focus is on learning how to spell and sounds rules.
