Piccolo Picture Books is an imprint of the Dutch publishing house Unieboek | Het Spectrum & Mobile Generation specifically interested in turning successful picture books into digital & interactive content for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. Piccolo Picture Books aims to bring children's books to life through interactivity and audio.
Fun Educational Apps had a chance to try several of the Piccolo’s book collection. We liked the high quality of the books and asked Piccolo books:
When did you start turning paper book into digital version ? And what made you decide to do it?
Piccolo Picture Books released their first book apps in August 2010. By turning successful Dutch picture books into apps and Piccolo makes them available to a much broader audience. Many people all over the world can now enjoy these wonderful books. It is important to Piccolo to preserve the reading experience of picture books when adapting it to a digital platform. Books are chosen for their beautiful art and classic stories.
What unique experience does Piccolo Pictures Books offer? What are the specific characteristics of a Piccolo Picture Book?
Each book is available in 5 languages English, French, Spanish, German, and Dutch.
Parents can read to their children in the traditional manner. Children can use the read-aloud function and read by themselves. When using the “learn-to-read” function, the highlighted text helps beginning readers associate the words they hear with the words they see.
The stories are professionally narrated and supported (as opposed to dominated) by fun sounds and interactive animations.
Yes, of course. A book app, or any kind of digital book, is different from a traditional picture book. We've all heard the funny anecdotes of kids now tapping and swiping regular books and TV screens; they are learning so quickly! One way that Piccolo Picture Books can change the way a kid reads is the choice in 5 different languages for each book. A child, as well as an adult, can familiarize themselves with a foreign language and learn to read and understand it. This would not be possible with a traditional picture book, often times the book is not even available in all these languages.
What is your vision for the future?
More digital books and also more Piccolo Picture Books. More bookshelf-apps with in-app books to purchase or subscription-based. And more platforms especially for digital books such as the new Nook and Kindle Fire.
